EARTH DAY IS FOR EARTH CHILDREN!

Earth Day is for Earth Children! This Sunday, April 22, 2012, people all over the world will celebrate a modern holiday called Earth Day. This holiday is all about loving and taking good care of our Mother Earth. It all started on April 20, 1970, back in the time of the Hippies and the Flower Children. People were upset and angry about a war the United States fought in for a long time. They wanted the war to end. The more they thought about the waste and destruction in war, the more they started thinking about Mother Earth herself. People started to notice air pollution and think it was not okay. They began to notice how the water was getting dirty from factories and waste. They all got together to have a big party to celebrate Mother Earth and to teach and learn ways to take better care of Her. The first Earth Day was a big success and it is still a wonderful and powerful holiday today. APRIL: LADY SPRING IN THE MEADOW

"Spring is here, our Lady dear, come to bless us ever. Spring is come, Winter's done. . ." --from An Earth Child's Book of Verse, "Lady Spring in the Meadow." We true lovers of faeryland and of our good Mother Earth feel a special burst of excitement when we see those first crocuses bloom, pink buds on the apple trees fatten and burst, and green suddenly shimmer again in the grass. April is true spring, even in many very cold and far away places. Earth is awake for certain now, like a lovely Lady all dressed in flowers and green leaves.

No wonder April's birthstone is the sparkly bright diamond! Sheep and lambs are special to April, too, as wobbly, wooly babies scamper across the fresh green fields. Look for (but please don't eat!) rambling vines of sweet peas now, April's birth flower. They aren't healthy for us to eeat, but guess what: these climbing, clinging, unstoppable vines with flowers of all colors grab hold of Spring and anchor her to Mother Earth--and in our hopes, hearts, and happenings, too! Sweet Peas are super-easy to grow, with large seeds that are easy to handle. Now is a good time to plant them along a fence or a rough wall with places for them to hang on and climb. Be ready, though: they will spread out all over, filling your space with a rainbow of colors and the sweet, light heavenly scent of Spring!
